THE TWO SIDES OF THE INTERNET( COUNTERARGUMENT

THE TWO SIDES OF THE INTERNET

The Internet has remarkable articles that provide a lot of information about the Internet benefits as well as the drawbacks, particularly articles related to children and the Internet. The Internet is a collection of interconnected computer networks, linked by copper wires, fiber – optic uses small cables, and wireless connection (Boustany, 2007). The World Wide Web is one of the services available via the Internet along with various others including e-mail, file sharing, online gaming and others. According to Internet World States (2007), as of December 30, 2007, 1.319 billion people use the Internet for different purposes. In the article Human Rights Faults China’s Curbs on the Internet (Boustany, 2007) Slaber cites that a writer on policy issues for the Washington, D.C. has asserted that the Internet is becoming a basic feature of global civilization. At present, there is a strong controversy about whether it should be restricted or if it should not. Some people talk about narrowing the technology gap (Boustany, 2007). Other people say that freedom in cyberspace is a pre –requisite for an information society ( Utsumi, 2005). In fact, the Internet is a very popular resource among people today. The Internet is a very important resource, but it should be restricted among children whose ages range between 6 and 12 years old because they can become addicted, they can experience pornography online and experience violent games that can cause a negative effect.

First, children become addicted. Many children spend many hours playing and chatting on the Internet. Spending many hours on the net can hurt their life in many ways. For example, children forget to do their homework and then they might flunk in class. Parents play an important role because they have to train children and to know what children are doing on the Internet by monitoring chat lines designed for their own age group and chatting with them about that not all information on the Internet is reliable.

Second, children can experience pornography online. Children’s’ mind is still innocent compared to adult people. When children are chatting, playing or they may be searching for ordinary everyday topic. It is possible they might run the risk to come across with information or images that could harm their innocence minds. For Example, some children don’t know what sex is, once they are online they know that the internet is a resource that can provide everything. Knowing this can push them to be tempted to watch porno and forget homework. Sometimes, they might be working or doing something good when suddenly sex online on the screen can appear. Depending on the age of your children you can negotiate boundaries. For example: Set a daily or weekly time limit. The amount of time will depend on the age. Parents have to teach children to keep a balance with their other activities. Another strategy is to allow the Internet access in public spaces so that you can keep an eye on what they are doing.

Violent games hurt children and cause negative effects. Many children tend to be overactive, lazy and disrespectful. Most of the time children try to do what they see on the screen. They also believe that everything they see is real. For example, many children like shooting games. Then they want to experience this in real life. Using filters can help you to control the information that is accessed by children on the Internet.

Some people (Schwartz 2002) argue that a law passed by congress in December 2000 requiring schools and libraries to use filters software changes the nature of libraries from being places that provide information to places that unconstitutionally restrict it. Those in favor of the filtering law say its opponents mischaracterize the law and the software. According to Senator John Mc Cain (2002) has said, “ Allows local communities to decide what technology they want to use, and what to filter out, so that our children’s minds aren’t polluted. Some people have to understand that restricting the Internet to children is to protect children. The Internet is an open place where everybody can access and that can jeopardize children’s minds.

In conclusion, It is necessary to have control over the use of the net specially with children of 6 to 12 because the material found on the net sometimes can be harmful to minors. Parents have to be aware of their children and try to control the Internet use.

SUMMARY #2 THE CHILDREN AND THE INTERNET

THE CHILDREN AND THE INTERNET
In the article, “ Benefits of the Internet”, the author describes important information about the benefits of the Internet as well as the online dangers for children. The author states two important points about the Internet. The Internet is a valuable resource that gives the opportunity to share resources and ideas with people that have the same interests. Also, using the Internet means that you have access not only to written words, but also to pictures, music and sound effects. The second point is that there is no regulation or control on the material that is produced on the Internet. This fact can lead children to come across material that is not appropriate for their ages.

The Internet plays an important role in peoples’ lives, but it should be limited for children because they can access inappropriate information, become victims of cyber bullying and make purchases online.
Today, children like playing a variety of games that the Internet offers, but sometimes they can come across pornography unexpectedly. For instance, one day I went to the cyber café in my country and I saw two children who laughed happily and who’ were between 12 and 14 years old. So, I decided to get close and see what was going on. Doubtless, they were watching two big, fat naked women who were dancing the belly dance. There are thousands of examples like this one going on around the world. Parents have to have more control over the children and to have to be aware of what children are doing and seeing on the Internet.

Besides that, children like meeting other people or they might feel the curiosity of using the chartrooms and e-mails. When chatting or sending e-mails, children are apt to meet people who might tease them by using false alarms and threats. For instance, there are many men who like having sex with children and who also know that chatting is good way to meet children (The Young Media Australia, 2008). Children don’t work and usually don’t have money in their pocket. So, these people take advantage of children by offering money out of sex. Parents have to talk openly to children about men who like giving money to children for sex.

Other children might be tempted by the different offers made on the Internet while playing. For example, children might be playing when an online advertise can appear on the screen saying that” You can win one million dollar just by clicking here. Who is the person who doesn’t want to win one million dollar? Today, parents have to understand that there are many ways in which children can get in trouble on the net.

In conclusion, parents have to teach their children to be critical users of the Internet. Parents have to talk openly to children and explain that the internet is nice but it can turn out to be dangerous sometimes. Children also need to have better control of the Internet, not the Internet over them.

CHILDREN AND THE INTERNET

Are your children Internet addicts? At present, the Internet has become a very popular resource, especially for children. Children believe that everything they see on the Internet is factual information. Today the Internet is a worldwide system of computer networks in which users at any computer can get information from any other computer (Whatis, 2006). According to Whatis (2006), the Advance Research Project Agency (ARPA) of the US government (1996), “the original aim was to create a network that allowed users of a research computer at one university to be able to talk to research computers at other universities”. Nowadays, “the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self- sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of the currently existing public telecommunication networks” (2006, p. 1). In fact, the Internet is becoming more popular every day. The internet also plays an important role in people’s lives, but it should be restricted among children whose ages range between 6 and 12 years old because children become addicted to the internet use, they can experience pornography online and they can also experience violent games that can cause a negative effect in their lives.

In the present day, children have used the interne for their homework, hobbies and other recreation forms. The Internet is a powerful resource that offers children a variety of activities, which lead children to become addicted. Among the list of activities have been e-mail addiction, web addiction, online pornography addiction and video game addiction. For instance, my little brother, who is just 10 years old, likes spending hours on the net, supposedly doing homework. Now, he likes spending 7 hours using the net. When my mother does not give him money to go the Internet service “ Cyber café” he gets angry and his behavior is unpleasant. In my brother’s case, the Internet has replaced many things he used to do and what began as using the net correctly became addiction. Another vivid example of how people are becoming addicted is a friend of mine who met a woman and started chatting her without knowing her. After chatting for nine months consecutively, the lady decided to say good-bye to my friend, who is still getting over that love disillusion. My friend was desperate and wanted to spend the whole day chatting with someone. As a result of his addiction, he lost his year of class and began drinking beer. Some psychiatrists label the use of certain technologies as addiction (Masnick, 2008). The Internet is a powerful resource that you don’t even notice when you become addicted to the use of it. Many people become dependent of the net and can’t live without it, particularly children. In cases like the above-mentioned, parents play an important role, because they have to explain to children that the Internet is a good resource, but they have to have a good balance in the use. By using reasonable boundaries on the use of the net we can help children to create a good habit and balance over the net use (Middlewood, 2008). For example, set a daily or weekly time limit. Two hours a day would be a great idea. He might have one hour to do homework and 1 hour to play or to do something else. Parents can also put a special schedule of Internet use on the wall. Always try to position computers close to you, so that you can monitor your children’s work and use as well. The amount of time of the Internet use has to be decided according to the age and the developmental stage of children. Another strategy is to negotiate bonus time when children use the Internet appropriately. Give bonus time to your children every time they use the net suitably. By doing this, you are teaching your children to have good balance over the Internet as well encouraging them to have a better control over technology.

Beside Internet addiction, the Internet has become a very useful tool for pedophiles and sexual predators as they distribute child pornography, and engage in sexually explicit conversations with children. For example, many children who are 6 to 12 years old know much or maybe nothing about sex. Suddenly, when using the net they can see some disturbing images. These images can awaken up their curiosity of what sex is, by leading them to trying to have sex with other children or by accepting love appointments with people on the net. According to one study (Rice, 1998), early exposure (under fourteen years old of age) to pornography is related to greater involvement in deviant sexual practice, particularly rape. The study reported that 53% of child molesters deliberately used the stimuli of pornography (Rice, 1998). In another study of convicted child molesters (Rice, 1998), 77% of those who molested girls admitted to having the habitual use of pornography. For example, some children can use pornographic pictures to show their victims what they will do. In my city, one student whose age was 7 years old was trying to rape a little girl whose age was 8 years old by using some pictures he got from the net.
Most parents find it difficult to talk to their children about sex in general. Parents have to protect their children’s innocence and purity by sitting with them while they are using the Internet and chatting with them about the two sides of the Internet. Talking about sex openly is one of the ways to help children to be aware of the current situation. Times have changed, and if parents do not do it, sooner or later they will find about it from someone else or by friends. Children have to be told by parents not to give their names, fill questionnaires, or send images of themselves because they might be used for other purposes. Parents have to encourage their children to report any particular suspicious act on the net or any person who offers or tries to do something abnormal. Using filters or blocking software helps keep track of what is going on. Filters or blocking software is the name used for programs that can be installed in your computer to control the information that is displayed or accessed by your children. Using filters minimizes the violent material, sexual material and chat lines. With filters children will not have access to much information and just information that is appropriate for their ages. Schools play an important role in children’s lives because they spend most of their time at school. This is a good opportunity for teachers to explain to the students that pornography and virtual pornography have many disadvantages for their lives because they have been associated with sexual abuse and many dramatic effects.

On the other hand, videos games are also substituting for homework and children’s hobbies. According to Dough (2007), the Federal Court in California states that video games should be labeled depending on the content and should not be sold or displayed on the net to minors. Many children become aggressive because of the violent games they play on. Legislators are cited the article “violent video game effects on children and adolescent” (Anderson, 2007), arguing that violence in video games could lead to psychological harm and give way to violent and irrational behavior. For example, my neighbor, who is 10 years old, tried to kill his little brother by using some techniques seen on the video games. This is strong evidence that violence games contribute to aggressiveness and violent behavior. Children always tend to imitate what they see in the real life as well as the video games. When they fight against other children at school, there is a strong possibility that they will use fighting techniques used in the videos games. Parents have to determine the appropriate video games installed on the computer or watched on the net. Children have to understand that video games are fictitious and have nothing to do with real life. According to Anderson Craig and Buckley (2007), the exposure to violent games and other forms of media violence constitutes a significant risk factor for later aggressive and violent behavior. Children have to play videos that give healthy entertainment and happiness, but try to avoid to media violence.

According to Schwartz (2002), a law passed by Congress in December 2000 requiring schools and libraries to use filtering software changes the nature of libraries from being places that provide information to places that unconstitutionally restrict it. Those in favor of the filtering law say its opponents mischaracterize the law and the software. People have to understand that restricting the net to children is done to protect children against the different bad things that can be found on the net. Donna Rice Hughes is cited in the article as saying that she is an opponent who has supported mandatory filtering, she also said the law contained a tremendous amount of flexibility (Schwartz, 2002).
It is extremely necessary that parents talk to their children about the Internet openly. Parents have to explain to children that overusing the Internet might lead them to Internet addiction. Also children have to know that not everything on the net is factual information. Parents have to introduce their children to the Internet and teach them to have a good control over it. Technology can be a positive factor if is used appropriately.

In conclusion, parents have to be aware of what their children are doing on the internet because they might become internet addicted, experience pornography at an early age as well as experience violent games that might give them negative effects in their lives. Parents have to sit and talk to their children about the positive and negative side of the Internet by telling them that the Internet offers good resources and offers shocking information or pictures. By doing so, you are helping your children to be ready to face the new globalized world and to have a good communication between children and parents.

THE INTERNET BENEFITS

In the article, “ Human Rights Report Faults China’s Curbs On Internet “ the author describes the issue of blocking the Internet access. At present, there are many countries limiting the access of Internet. Also, many people are imprisoned simply for expressing their peaceful views online. Other countries are applying regulations against NGOs and the mass media for political freedom. Many people use the Internet with good objectives. The Internet should not be limited because it provides good learning resources, good communication and technology and good economic impact for many countries.
Many people use the Internet in order to widen their knowledge and to be ready to confront the different challenges that high learning demand. For instance, many teachers in my country are being trained in using the internet resources and the different websites that provide information related to the level and class they are teaching. As a result many teachers have been experiencing technology versus classes and they are very happy with the results students are receiving. Many students have expressed the difference in the classes they are taking now by saying that they feel classes are more interesting and motivating when they use the Internet. For that reason the internet is a valuable resource that offers people, students and the society in general good opportunities in a globalize world.
The Internet is also an important means of communication. Today communication and technology are both broad disciplines that allocate many benefits. For example, in my city, there are many students that belong to communities. They used to spend many days doing their homework and usually had to come to the city to get books or information that helped them to finish their homework. Nowadays, they have the Internet café that provides this service for $1 an hour. Also, communities’ people had to go to the city to make phone calls. Now they communicate using the e-mail. These are some of the common benefits given by the Internet.
This is also a good way to protect the economy of the country and citizens as well. The Internet has provided many business people the chance to do business and advertise online, which has given a real boost to the world’s economy. For example, I had to buy a book for my new class novel and film with Ms. Heidi. Unfortunately, books ran out at the university bookstore and I did not know what to do. So, my friend explained to me the way I could order it on the internet and finally I have the book with me.
In conclusion, neither countries nor government can limit the Internet use so far, because that would be like living outside of the planet earth. The Internet should be available to all people to improve their economic situation, their communication and their lifesyles.

HOMEWORK AND YOUTUBE

Many people say that two things cannot be done at the same time. Let me tell you that I like to type my writing homework and to listen to music or to watch videos in YouTube. I found it calming and relaxing. According to my experience, there are some aspects to take into account when doing homework and listening to music or chatting. First, adjust the volume and be sure you don’t have to interpret any text. Make sure you are not doing something that demands you to reflect your point of view or make comments. Loud music will not help you to focus on demanding homework. I also like listening to some music after a long class, because it makes me relax and puts me under sedation. Some teachers say it is not good to be doing two things at the same time. Today many students like doing both things and have a great time. For instance, a friend of mine says he can not study if he doesn’t listen to rock music. He says that he feels like music makes him alive and also makes him feel like he is not tired. Technology is so amazing that we as students or people cannot avoid using it. A few years ago, if you wanted to see videos you had to go to the movies or any other place. Today technology gives you an easier life. Sometimes homework is difficult, but you don’t even know it or see it because you are working under music’s effects. It is incredible how many things have changed so far.

MY EATING CULTURE

In my country, some people enjoy eating by using their fingers instead of the spoon. They say that food’s taste is mouth-watering when using their fingers. Nevertheless, other people say that is rude and disrespectful, using their fingers instead of the spoon. People usually like to have big portions instead of quality. Families usually eat wherever they want to, no matter if there is a dinning room. The place is not a problem. Nevertheless, some people like eating all together like a real family. Customs change from one family to the other. In my family, portion is very important, and when were kids, we used to fight for big portions. Today, we care about big portions, but we have grown up and fighting would not be a good idea. When visit someone, there is a strong chance that you will be invited to eat; it is not appropriate to refuse their invitation, because they might believe you don’t like to eat what they eat or you eat better food. If you eat in a friend’s house, you will have to eat with that friend, specifically in his house. Eating in his house is like a reward for being friendly.

EL Sesteo restaurant is a very popular restaurant in the city where i live. Many people like to go to El Sesteo because the food is really appetizing. If i could go now, i would order beef on the grill, which is delicious. Unfortunately, everything has two sides. You need to have much money with you because food is very classy and expensive. Some people usually go when theycelebrate an important event, birthday party or social gathering. The other point is that if you like dancing, you can't. They offer just slow music and it is very loud. Young people do not like going to El Sesteo because they say El Sesteo is boring and is just for old people, even though they do not doubt that the food is mouth- watering. They also say that you need to have cash in your pocket or you might end up doing the dishes.
